Nigerian music veteran and legend, William Onyeabor has passed on at the age of 70. William Onyeabor got his fame with his self-made African electro-funk albums of the 1970s and ’80s and major hits both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. One of his biggest hits to date is his single, When The Going Is Good & Smooth.
Onyeabor died on Monday at his home in Enugu, Nigeria. He was 70. His eldest son, Charles Onyekachi Onyeabor, announced the death. He did not specify the cause.
Mr. Onyeabor (pronounced OWN-yah-bore) released nine albums from 1977 to 1985 that sounded unlike anything you’d hear in African music. His songs relied on multitracked synthesizers and programmed, metronomic rhythms, yet the tracks were also infused with unmistakably African highlife, funk and Afrobeat grooves.
His music has also been sampled by a lot of new generation Nigerian artists, most recently by Timaya in his track with Flavour, Money.

Clinic Matters actress Amanda Ebeye had her son in Canada in November 2016, to the surprise of many of her fans, as she had kept her relationship private.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, she opened up about why she didn’t marry her son’s father and shared her hopes that Nigerians will remove the stigma of single parenthood.
Why she didn’t marry her son’s father –
“I did not marry the father of my child because he is not my husband and he is not meant to be. I could have been in the most useless relationship right now if I wanted but I told myself instead of giving my son this shameless pretender and liar of a man as a father, I would take care of him and he will be fine. I tell you that since I took that stance, I’ve not looked back for one day and God keeps giving me the strength to move on. If it is God’s, one day a good man will come and you’ll be invited to my wedding but for now, I’m single and all that matters to me is my son,”
On backlash from Nigerians –
“I didn’t feel bad because we are all entitled to our opinions. Most people don’t know what other people go through but they are fast to bury them. We all hide behind our beautiful make-up and clothes that people forget that we all cry sometimes. And the most painful part is that it is mostly women that do these criticisms. Some are even going through worse situations but they come on social media, wearing make-up and fine clothes and start commenting but when they go home, their husbands would slap them for not cooking their food early, and they receive it with smiles, walk away and say I’m fighting for my man. Hypocrites!”
On being a single mother –
“Being a mother is the best feeling in the world and it’s unexplainable. If you’re a woman and you haven’t experienced it, you have to look forward to it and pray it happens. I remember when I used to hear our mothers say a woman is not complete without childbirth. I never believed them but sincerely now I do. I’m glad I’ve had this chance to go through this experience and feeling. I would not trade it for a billion dollars.
“It’s been amazing. People think it’s very hard and difficult but I’ll tell you this today and I’ll use this medium to speak to women going through bad relationships. You can do it alone, do not let some man think he’s your Alpha and Omega. That’s for the Lord.
Her advice for Wives –
“Honour your husband. Be diligent as a wife. Do your job as a wife. Be his mother, cook his meals and cater to your family. Have a job so you can support your family too. He pays the fees, you can choose to pay for a vacation for the family to France. Do all you can as a good wife and a virtuous woman but if you do all that and he disrespects you, cheats on you and gives you bull please know you stand right with God and don’t be scared to walk out the door with your kids,” she said.

NSCDC Arrests Borno Govt Official for Inserting Electric Heater in his 10-year-old Son’s Anus over Suspicion of Being Gay

One Shettima Gudumballi, 58, who allegedly inserted electric heater into the anus of his 10-year-old son for being gay has been arrested by Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The Commandant of the Corps, Ibrahim Abdullahi, stated this in an interview with NAN in Maiduguri on Saturday.
Abdullahi said that the suspect committed this inhumane act over allegations that his young son had been engaging in homosexual activities with some politicians.
He said:
On January 19, one Malam Shettima Gudumballi, 58, of 1000 housing, a director with the Borno State Ministry of Forestry, was arrested by the command for torturing his 10-year-old son Umar Shettima with electric heater.The commandant told NAN that the father is still in the custody of the corps and would be arraigned in court after investigation for his dastardly act.
The father suspected that his son was a gay along with four others, who also mentioned 12 other boys between the ages of 11 and 14 (who are) involved (in the act). After examination of the victim by doctors on duty at the State Specialist Hospital, they suggested that the anus might developed bacteria and further complicated.

Trump, made the remarks at the CIA headquarters on his first full day in the office. He also told the intelligence agencies that he was not against them.
He promised to ensure that radical militant groups are are crushed wherever they are.
The president, who has had public disagreements with the intelligence community, particularly for releasing damaging reports against him about Russian involvement in the hacking of emails belonging to the Democratic Party, was always on Twitter attacking the leadership of the agencies.
According to him, his visit was prompted by the media reports portraying him as having a negative view about the CIA.
“As you know, I have a running war with the media because they make it look as if I have a feud with the intelligence agencies. I used to call them ‘dishonest media’ but they did a fantastic job covering my inauguration yesterday. The reason you (CIA) are my first stop is because of the media because they are the most dishonest people. They make you feel that I hate the intelligence people,” Trump said.
He also denied reports that he removed the statute of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. from the White House, and blamed the U.S. media for what he called “dishonest reports”.
“I love honesty and I want people to report me honestly,” he said.
Trump, who turns 71 next June, also described himself as “young”.
“I feel young (like) I am 30, 35 or 39. When we were running the campaign and moving about, people often say that I feel young and I truly feel that I am young.”
Trump, who is facing massive protests from women’s groups and civil rights activists across the country and the world, over his utterances during the campaigns and his policy announcements particularly over minority and immigrants rights, however, did not make any remarks to defuse the protests.
The turnout at anti-Trump marches across the country exceeded the estimation of the organisers who particularly declared that it was no longer possible for the Washington rally to march to the White House because of the unprecedented attendance.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in a London Hospital where he was receiving medical care, the Nigerian Mission in UK has said.However, Official Spokesperson to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (SSA, Media & Publicity) Garba Shehu confirmed less than 30 minutes ago that the President is still holidaying in Europe, alive and well.
According to the information released by the Nigerian Embassy, Buhari left the West African country for a vacation in the U.K in order to undergo medical checks.
One of the President’s aides who accompanied him to the U.K and spoke on condition of anonymity said the President has been battling an “unknown disease” for a while now.
Though the decision to receive medical care in a foreign land angered some of his countrymen, the Nigerian community in London have expressed deep shock for the President’s demise.
It is the second time in a year that Buhari has sought medical treatment outside Nigeria ; he also traveled to London in June 2016 and saw an ear, nose and throat specialist after contracting an ear infection.

236 people feared dead in Rann IDP camp ‘accidental’ bombing - Borno official

Officials of Kalabalge local government in Borno state have said 236 people were killed in the Rann IDP bombing on Tuesday, January 17
- The local government chairman, Babagana Malarima, gave the figure in Borno state
- He called for compensation from President Muhammadu Buhari so as to help console the people who lost their relations to the unfortunate incident
Kalabalge local government officials in Borno state have claimed that not less than 236 people were killed during the accidental military air strike that hit Rann, a community in the state on Tuesday January 17, 2017.
Prior to the official figure, there was confusion over the death toll from the airstrike.
Army keeps conducting land and air strikes in Borno
Vanguard is reporting that Babagana Malarima, the chairman of the local government council, said the death figure was higher than the earlier figures released by group under the aegis of Doctors Without Borders.

According to him: “From what the people who buried the dead victims with their hands told me, not those who treated the wounded, they buried 234 dead and I later got a report that two of the injured taken to Maiduguri died, that totaled 236.”
The IDP camp that was bombed was put together to assist people running from Boko Haram in the state.
The military jet on Tuesday accidentally dropped a bomb inside the Rann IDP camp leading to death of several persons in the community.
Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, the army spokesman, said the tragic incident was a mistake and it was deeply regretted.

As at Tuesday, there were no exact figures of the casualties as there was confusion all over the place.
While military officials say the incident was a mistake, the IDP dwellers claimed it was not a mistake, but that they were deliberately bombed .
Malarima said: “Our people are really traumatised that a fighter jet belonging to their country could make this mistake and kill them the way it did in their own country.
“Lives and property have been lost. It is not enough to just bury the dead and pray for their souls. Their families should be supported as is done in other countries”.
Channels Television also reports that Malarima is calling for compensation for his people.

“Our problem since this local government was created about 20 years now (is that) we need a road to link this headquarter to other parts of the state (while) the second thing is with what happened. Now, we are begging President Muhammadu Buhari to compensate us.
“Many people have lost their loved ones as most of them are the bread winners. 236 people is not a small number; we need to compensate these people. Yes! 234 (people were) buried by the community and it’s even more than this.
“The report I received from Maiduguri this morning (Saturday) is that two people who are in the hospital have also died. Therefore we need to be compensated seriously.
“It was the market day, it was not like the normal market day. After all this is a place where our activities was on a skeletal basis but it has been reduced to the lowest ebb, ” the LGA chairman said.
The strike was said to have happened while humanitarian workers were distributing food in Rann, a small town close to the Cameroon border where some 20,000 to 40,000 people had sought refuge from the Boko Haram insurgency.
