Lota Ofodile: To Get Married or Not? What NdaniTV’s ‘Gidi Up’ Taught Me About Letting Go
Although I might still be considered too young to be thinking or talking about marriage, I believe I have a few words to share about the topic. Of course, I have never been married before; I don’t even know that I have dated anyone that seriously to say that I have had a close-enough equivalent. But over the years, from movies, books, songs and the lived experiences of friends, colleagues and family, I have learned a few things about the matter.
We have all heard the “Marriage is not easy”, “It requires a lot of work”, “Every marriage has its ups and downs” kinds of talks, and given the insurmountable rates of separations and divorces, and just plain unhappiness and dissatisfaction encountered by married couples, I am convinced that marriage is no easy feat. So why is it still such a sought-after enterprise?
You’re probably thinking this is one of those feminist rants, or anti-marriage arguments, or something along those lines. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it has absolutely nothing to do with that. In fact, I would openly like to state that being happily married and building a home is perhaps one of my biggest aspirations in life (before you say anything, just remember, to each his own).
Anyway, what I am trying to get at is, despite the beauty, complexity and intricacy of marriage, for some reason, it seems that we are so desperate for it that we end up getting into it for the wrong reasons, and settling for much less than we deserve. And this applies to both men and women, even though in Nigeria, there is perhaps ten times more pressure on females to get married, and earlier too.
There is a myriad of reasons that could lead to these hastened, not-well-thought-out marriages including: unplanned pregnancies, financial interests, getting “old” and the pressure to get married/have kids that accompanies it. Oh! and my personal favorite: “We’ve been dating for so long already, we might as well just get married”, even when the love and excitement have died out. Perhaps the most interesting and accurate description of this example can be seen on Season 2 of Ndani Tv’s “Gidi Up” (only the best TV show ever! If you haven’t seen it yet, I have no words for you). Seriously, go check it out, it’s amazing! The producers just confirmed that Season 3 is on its way… so excited!:D
On the show, one of the characters, Sharon, played by the one and only Adesua Etomi, is engaged to be married to her long-time boyfriend and only child of her father’s bestfriend, Meka, played by Anthony Monjaro. Wedding plans are already underway, just for us to find out that Meka isn’t exactly happy or excited to be getting married. He recently lost his parents who were very wealthy business moguls, and he’s had to fill their shoes and run the family business. He feels like he hasn’t lived his life for himself but for others, that his entire life has already been scripted for him and he basically just has to show up to play the part. And it wasn’t that he did not have feelings for Sharon, because he did; it was that because they were childhood friends turned lovers, everyone expected that them getting married would be a no-brainer. But now that the time has come, he realizes that he doesn’t love her anymore, at least not in that way, and definitely not enough to want to get married.
Unlike basically all of my friends who have seen the show, I understood exactly where he was coming from. (I can feel some of your eyes rolling at this point, but just hear me out). Of course, it is not fair or nice to Sharon who is still in love with him that he feels this way right now, or that he let things get this far… but what would you rather have? That he marries her out of pity or obligation/duty and then in the future asks for a divorce? That he cheats on her or emotionally checks out of the marriage and leave her unhappy?
I don’t know about y’all, but I am sure that I don’t want to be married to someone just because he pities me, or because he feels like he has to. Maybe you don’t mind—I don’t know; whatever rocks your boat. What I know is that even though it will hurt like hell, and it seems like there has been too much emotional, time and even monetary investment “wasted” on any relationship, when it doesn’t feel right or complete, when it seems like something fundamental is missing, proceeding to marriage might just not be the brightest of ideas.
Obviously, this is not to say that we should easily give up on our relationships when there’s a glitch somewhere, NO. In fact, once there are any issues, I think it’s always smart to try to resolve them; talk things through and try to work things out. There is no guarantee that you will be successful, but at least you BOTH tried. Perhaps Meka and Sharon need to consider that. But if after talking about it, making some changes/adjustments, taking a break, counseling, or however else you choose to accomplish that, it still doesn’t feel right, it might just be time to pick up and leave, especially if your issues are between you two, and not external (from friends, family, work, money, etc.)
Everyone is different; we all have our peculiarities when it comes to love, relationships, and marriage—what we can handle or deal with, and those things we absolutely can’t tolerate. So it’s really up to the individual(s) involved. I always say: your spouse is literally the only important and relevant person in your life you have the ability to chose, so don’t mess it up for whatever reason. Rather than subject yourself or the other party to stress or misery, be honest with yourselves and do what needs to be done; there is already enough stress from work, the economy, and life in general.
This might sound a little selfish, but if there is one thing I’ve learned about relationships and breakups, it’s: “do what’s best for you, because ultimately, that’s also what’s best for your partner” (this was also said at one point on the show by Yvonne, played by Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama). There is no need holding on to something that can’t stand on its own. How much longer before you give up and let go?
P.S. Can you already tell I am obsessed with Gidi Up? ’cause I am! Love it!

Osayi Emokpae Lasisi: 7 Lessons from President Trump That You Can Implement in Your Business
“A wise person knows there is something to be learned from everyone” – Unknown
I’m a firm believer that success leaves clues, and failure also leaves clues. When someone is successful at something that I want, I sit down and try to analyze and pick out what is useful for me.During the US Elections I sat and watched and learned. The more I learned, the more I realized that I needed to share these insights with you.
So here we go! 7 amazing lessons from President Trump that could help you be more successful today.
Attention is the new currency
Trump didn’t have to spend as much money on advertising…because he knew how to generate attention and use it to push his own agenda. In this new economy you also need to figure out how to use attention to your advantage.
Hollywood is not reality
When we watch movies we get this idea of America. Similar to what Chimamanda said about the danger of a single story, we think that all Americans think a certain way, and that what we watch on TV is all of reality. Donald Trump showed that he was anti many of the things that we thought Americans loved, and yet he won. In your business you can’t make decisions based on what you see on TV. You need to do your research and really hear what people want, and then attract those people to you.
There are people out there who are looking for you
We get so caught up trying to be like other people. We hear that this person is successful, so we try to be like them – hoping that we will be successful as well. Trump stayed true to himself. He held to his opinions no matter how offensive others may have thought they were. He dressed the way he wanted to dress. He styled his hair the way he wanted to style it. We too must learn that we don’t have to be like anyone else. There are people that will be attracted to us, and to our businesses just as we are; but it’s important that we find that unique aspect of ourselves.
The most vocal people are not always the majority
This is similar to point two about Hollywood; but I also want to point out this distinction. Many of the people on social media, on TV, on whatever medium, said they would not vote for Trump. They did not expect him to win, yet he won. Sometimes in your business the people that complain the most or scream the most, or ask for the most may seem to be the voice of the people, but if you take the time to actually connect with the people – your ideal audience – you will see that your power often lies in the quiet majority.
Your past is important, but not as important as your present
People talked about Trumps past failures, or about his wife’s past indiscretions, but it didn’t matter. The masses were drawn to his present. Sometimes we get so caught up in our past failures and our past decisions thinking that people will never trust us or work with us, or do anything we want them to do. In the end you will find that you can recover from any past decision, if you are able to connect with us in a way that makes sense for us, and you can show us how what you are doing will benefit us.
What is, is not always what must be
When Trump announced he was running for president, many people didn’t take him seriously, because he wasn’t like the others that came before him, so they were sure that he didn’t stand a chance. While I believe in investing in coaches and learning your trade, we also need to give ourselves the freedom to be creative. The ways that people ran their business in the 80’s or 90’s or even the early 2000’s will not be as successful today. So your job is to find the most creative ways to be successful today. Learn the principles, but create new strategies.
Everything is possible
Whatever that dream or that goal, it is possible because today all we need is a dream and a plan of execution. You can connect with people all over the world via the internet, you can take your office with you wherever you go just as long as you have a laptop and internet access. Everything is possible, you are no longer restricted to just one country. Everything is possible – all you need is the right strategy.
So now that you have learned these things, what are you going to do with your power?

“We advice the general public to tread with caution and desist from transacting any business with him” – Five Star Music releases Official Statement on Allegations of HarrySong’s Arrest
Earlier today there were reports that Harrysong had been arrested by his former label house Five Star Music for a breach of contract. The reports were unconfirmed however, Five Star Music label has issued a statement on why they are taking legal actions against Harrysong.
Read below.
It has become both imperative and necessary to state our position on the ongoing misguided and fallacious news making the rounds in the media between our esteemed record label and Mr. Harry Tare Okri.
Sometime in 2008 when Mr. Harry first approached our record label for a music contract, we immediately declined the request when we found out that he had a subsisting contract with one Mr. Kevin Luciano of ‘Question Mark Entertainment Label’. All efforts then by Mr. Harry to influence our management proved abortive as our position was maintained on grounds of equity, fairness and professionalism.
For further avoidance of doubts on the true facts of the present situation, our management has decided to officially set the records straight, because of negative and pervasive influence being foisted on the psyche of our numerous and well meaning fans.
- Our first encounter with Mr. Harry was sometime in 2008 when he approached our management for a music contract. As stated above, according to our findings at that time, his contract with ‘Question Mark Entertainment Record Label’ was still subsisting and valid. Obviously we declined when we found out that Mr. Harry’s plans were ill orchestrated against his employers, by walking out on them without fulfilling the obligations clearly contained in his running contract with them.
3a. The tussle continued between Harry and his employers till sometime in 2014 when Harry once again approached us, this time very desperate. We opened preliminary discussions with him but demanded an official document from his former employers relieving him of any obligation or liability with regards to his contract with them.
- When Harry’s employers (Question Mark Entertainment) got wind of his frantic efforts to desert his contract, a stern and official public statement was issued against Mr. Harry and a certain clause establishing his existing contract was clearly published for full consumption by the general public.
3b. Our move to do things right and professionally with Mr. Harry earned us a Twenty Million Naira Legal Suit (N20,000,000.00) from Mr. Kevin Luciano of Question Mark Entertainment (Records are there for confirmation). We were joined as co-defendants with Mr. Harry.
Juxtaposing the above with what is going on now, it is quite unfortunate because “Good intentions counts as much as good actions, and the person seeking to do good is as good as someone who actually does it.
3c. Knowing the vulnerability of Mr. Harry on the impending legal suit, we solicited the help of certain well respected individuals in the Music industry to wade into the matter, one of which was our dear veteran Daddy Showkey. Mr. Luciano having found out our intention from inception to act in good faith, agreed to withdraw his suit against Mr. Harry and our company BUT, not without consequential and settlement fees of Five Million Naira (N5,000,000.00, records available for verification).
We paid this amount solely without Mr. Harry contributing a dime!
- It is often said that “When people sense that someone else is vulnerable, they tend to attack, for when the calf falls, the knives come out”. However, in Mr. Harry’s vulnerable situation, we did nothing of the sort. Rather, we whole heartedly bought all his liability off Question Mark Entertainment Label, and welcomed him as a family into Five Star Music Label, a genuine gesture and decision we are all regretting this present day.
- Because we are known for running our affairs professionally and legally, we signed a three year contract with Mr. Harry and certain conditions and obligations were specifically and properly spelled out apart from the terms of the contract. Most important of these were his obligations to our Music Label, which amongst others include:
These conditions were never met.
- That he must deliver at least, three (3) full music albums on or before the expiration of the first term of his three year contract, otherwise the label solely reserves the right either to rescind or extend the contract.
- While in the employment of the Five Star Music Label, he must not engage himself in anyway whatsoever, whether directly, by proxy or through a third party in any Music or recording business other than that of Five Star Music. This condition was also repeatedly breached as Mr. Harry has been releasing music, going on tours locally and internationally without our consent or paying the agreed percentage to the label.
In setting the records straight, let it be known that before now, the label refrained from instituting any legal actions against him for his blatant breach of contract, just because he was still considered as part of Five Star Music family. However, his posture as clearly manifested through his lawyers whom have continued to write and make all kinds of assertions and threats to the label necessitated our immediate response for the general public to know the truth and inherent facts of the story. For it is said, that facts speaks for themselves.
- Five Star Music wishes to state categorically that this reckless breach of contract by Mr. Harry stands contrary to our company’s work ethics and will therefore be pursued to a logical conclusion using the full instrument of the law.
We therefore advice the general public to tread with caution and desist from transacting any business with Mr. Harry Tare Okri, as same is both illegal and a total breach of his existing contract with our record Label, ‘Five Star Music Label’. Notwithstanding what propaganda he feeds the public, we further advice that proper verifications are made from us, as there is no iota of truth emanating therefrom.
Signed
Mr. C.C Chris
