The Fifth Edition of NECLive Set to hold with Alibaba, Basketmouth, Opa Williams, Frank Donga, Teju Babyface & Tee A | Wednesday, April 26th
Some of Nigeria’s leading comedians have signed up for the fifth edition of Nigerian entertainment conference. Now in its fifth year, NECLive is the umbrella conference for the entertainment industry in Nigeria, providing an opportunity for strategic discussions, and a marketplace for ideas, products and services.
Date: Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Venue: Lamdmark Events Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos
The organisers say this year’s edition will focus on how Nigerian entertainment, and indeed entertainment from Africa is finding renewed favour with fans at home, and all over the world.
In 2016, Nollywood movies surpassed Hollywood and Bollywood in cinema earnings and the share of customer voice in Nigeria. Nigerian music finally went global, riding on the back of our peculiar pop music, and nomadic musicians. The world’s attention has understandably shifted to Africa with funders, labels, producers, and awards looking to play within the region. Nigeria is at the fore of this new wave, but places like Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Ghana are equally well positioned.
Has the time come for Africa to provide entertainment for the major percentage of the world’s 7 billion people? They say we tell a different kind of story in Africa; we have a rare, peculiar sound. And they’re buying it from America to London and Singapore. Back home, the booming youth populations are also more interested in local content like never before. From Iroko to Mavin and Africa Magic, the numbers show audiences on the continent are increasingly embracing our creativity; millions are choosing their own local entertainment over the imported.
But the diverse entertainment industries are still struggling. The structure to rip the dividend of the boom continues to lie comatose. From weak government policies to unsustainable business models, it appears we have plenty work to do if we are to benefit from what’s coming in significant ways. It could indeed be time for Africa. But what does this mean for the industry players? What do we need to know? To do? And how can we make sure we do not collectively miss this opportunity?
One of the industries leading that change is comedy and NECLive5 will feature some of the most important players in the sector, from pathfinders Ali Baba and Opa Williams, to trailblazers like Basketmouth, Basorge Tariah, Tee A, Frank Donga, and Teju Babyface. This year will feature a workshop on comedy, featuring established and fast rising acts.
Happening just a month before the recently announced Eko Comedy Festival, NECLive is placing a well-deserved attention to an industry best described, just like Nollywood, as a rose that grew out of concrete.
‘Our comedians are superstars everywhere. From Mr. Ibu to Aki n Paw Paw, Bovi, I Go Dye, Baba Suwe, Basketmouth, Ali Baba, Tee A, Okon, Gbenga Adeyinka, Julius Agwu and Gandoki. They’ve carved out a sub-industry, groomed it, expanded it, and exported it with little support from government or organisations. They’ve dominated stand-up, TV, music, and now they’re redefining home entertainment through what the likes of AY, Kayode Peters, Bunmi Davies and others are doing in Nollywood. It’s time to revisit how it all started, discuss what their individual and collective successes mean for the rest of the industry and our continent, take lessons from what’s worked and what’s not, and design a path to a good future’, conference founder Ayeni Adekunle said.
The conference will be hosted by Tee A, for the fifth year running.

[News]Senator Bukola Saraki declare assets CCB affirm
Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), PHOTO: LUCY LADIDI ELUKPOThe trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki continued yesterday at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) admitting that Saraki did declare his assets and those of his family members. The third prosecution witness and a staff of CCB, Mr. Samuel Madojemu, also admitted before the tribunal during cross-examination that Saraki equally declared the assets of his wife,Mrs. Toyin Saraki, both in Nigeria and abroad, as well as those of his childrenwhose names were not read out.At the resumed trial of the defendant on alleged false declaration of assets, the witness admitted that Saraki’s assets were recorded in the Assets Forms he submitted to CCB at various times.Led in the cross-examination by Saraki’s counsel, Paul Erekoro (SAN), Madojemu was meant to read out the list of assets declared by Saraki in his name, those of his wife and his children, when he held office as Kwara State governor and upon his assumption of office as a senator. The witness told the tribunal that the investigation, which led to the arraignment of Saraki in 2015, was actually carried out by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).He noted that his role and those of CCB were limited to the review of EFCC report and compared same with the defendant’s Assets Declaration Form.He added that he was invited orally into a team that reviewed the EFCC report and compared the asset form ofSaraki, and that CCB has no written report on the outcome of the revision of the EFCC report.Answering further questions, he maintained that former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu who was equally investigated on assets declaration enjoyed the privileged of being invited by CCB to clarify l discrepancies in his asset forms submitted to the Bureau. When asked why same gesture was not extended to Saraki when his asset forms were been investigated, he stated that CCB cannot be blamed for not inviting Saraki because it saw the need to limit its investigation to the asset forms endorsed by Saraki on oath.On the alleged double salary received by Saraki after he had left office as Kwara State governor and when he was in the Senate, the witness pointedout that CCB did not consult with the Kwara State government to confirm the claim but only based its acceptance of the claim on the report of the EFCC and a bank account of Saraki with the Access Bank.He said that he would not know whether it was pension that was beingpaid to Saraki by Kwara State government, as he had no access to the Kwara State law on pension scheme for ex-political office holders. But when asked to point out in the Access Bank statement of account where double salaries were allegedly paid to Saraki, the witness replied: “I just cited a statement of account of the defendant. I did not study it. So, I will not be in position so say more on the salary issue.”Madojemu also told the tribunal that there was no provision in the CCB Asset Declaration Form for any declarant to declare properties owned by the declarant’s companies and that there was no provision for cash lodgment in the asset forms. On his earlier evidence that Saraki did not declare his property in London in respect of any mortgage, the witness said: “I did not consult with Fortis Bank of London to know whether the six-bedroom bungalow at South West London was redeemed with the bank loan.He however admitted that the six-bedroom bungalow was declared by the defendant in 2011 and that Saraki also claimed in his asset form that he acquired a property from proceeds from sales of rice, sugar commodities and bank loan.At the end of the cross- examination, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs applied for an adjournment to enable him re-examine the witness. The counsel told the tribunal that he needed the adjournment because the witness was cross-examined for four days by the defence. The tribunal has however adjourned trial till April 5 for re-examination of thewitness by the prosecution.
