Gyang Chuwang Junior, who goes by the stage name “Verse”, is nothing short of young greatness and agility bundled in a fine linen cloth of swag and a whole lot of cool. As a 90’s child, he is an epitome of what’s next in the generation of Afro Hip Hop & Afro Pop. As the first child of 4, he has put it upon himself to display an acute drive towards achieving success in the African music industry. With a versatile approach to rapping and singing, Verse stands firm that he is the next big thing to come out of Nigeria.
Verse began his musical career in 2004 with a group hailing from Jos called the Ben J Square. A group formed by himself and his peers from the same high school the P-Square brothers, M.I. went to, and some church members, they were able to attract enthusiasts and managers of the Jos music industry. Drawing Inspiration ranging from world renowned artist such as Kanye West, Talib Kweli, 2Baba (Tuface), Kendrick Lamar, Timaya, Lagbaja, Ice Prince, Verse creates his own sound that will make you want to sing a long and dance to the rhythm of his melodic chorus.
He later went on to make himself recognizable in the streets of Abuja music by attending talent shows and open mic events, which he won all competition he auditioned for. The management of Young Africa Nation (YAN) scouted him after YAN President, Mr Uche Okonkwo, attended the Eden garden show and for Verse, the rest became dreams to actualize. Today, when asked in an interview, what his music does to the listeners, he answers, “my music is a pot of sweet sounding and savory tunes served to heal every soul. Music as the whole gives me the most joy and security I need to continue living, so that’s why I do it. I make Music to Live!”
Without a stutter, Verse released Freak freestyle (French Montana cover) followed by Pasa and, more recently, Biri Da Wondo (Monkey Knicker). Verse believes in hard work and nothing good comes cheap so he put in his best and most extensive skills into making more music that will make any age, group, tribe, ethnicity and indigene hail this young man from Du Village in Jos. Therefore, Ladies and Gentleman, get ready to embrace a new universe.
