Mabel Oine Alubo (Bella) was born to a professor and a proprietress on the 8th of August, 1993 as the last of four children in Jos where she was born and bred to tertiary education. An early free spirit, Bella developed interests in arts, handcrafts and writing; in hind sight, its true that behind every great rapper is poet as Bella began writing poems the tender age of 12 while listening to alot of Eminem, Ray Boltz, Plantashun Boys, Daddy Showkey, R Kelly and the Spice Girls.
At age 17, Bella tried her tentacles in modeling and pageantry. She came first Runner Up in the annual Miss Tourism Plateau and finished 3rd Runner Up of Miss Plateau and she stills looks good in front of a camera as her Instagram and Twitter followers can attest. She studied Micro-Biology from the University of Jos and just concluded her National Youth Service program in Cross River state.
Bella’s love for music started as early as age 6 when she listened to the Slim Shady LP by Eminem and can still remember the Public Announcement Skit. She wrote her first rap lyrics at the age of 16 after listening to Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” and like many artistes from Jos and environs, she was inspired by the rise to stardom of M.I, Ice Prince and Jesse Jags from Jos. She kept working hard and jumped on Kanye West and DJ Khaled’s “Theraflu” beat for a freestyle. After graduating with a Bsc in 2015, she released her first single “No Lie” and freestyle to Falz”s “Karishika”, ultimately forcing her way into Jos music conscience.
She used the buzz created from the critical acclaim that came with those records to release her first body of work; The Bella EP’ where she worked with Jxmmy Whxxlxr who said “the EP was made in a week and it was pure vibes and great musical energy”. She didn’t go by the conventional process of promoting upcoming Nigerian music but she rather opened a SoundCloud and iTunes account to push her and automatically set her apart from her peers. The EP was well received and created a new buzz for the new girl on the rap scene.
She has featured prominent rap Og, T.R (formerly known as Terry Tha Rapman) on her single “Testify” and a cover of IcePrince’s “More”. Other singles include “Alhaji Money” and “Myself” both produced by SynX. On her opinion on music, she shares “the reason people like music so much is because it is relatable and makes us feel interconnected”. She is inspired to write by real situations and life experiences and most recently released her second mixtape “The Bella EP 2: Lucid Dreaming” which is still stacking up the numbers on iTunes and SoundClound. She recently released a song with her label mate,Ycee titled “Radio” which has been well received.
Her fanbase is rapidly growing with the release of every new work as she proves her versatility across different rap styles as she says she listens to Drake, Kanye West, Angel haze and Kunem Slizzle. The pressure is on for her to deliver on the grand-stage having signed her first contract and we”ll wait to see what the “too ajebutter for the razz kids and too razz for the ajebutter kids” rapper hits us with next.
