International observers of Nigeria’s general elections have called for the cancellation of the Governorship and House of Assembly polls in Rivers State.
The demand was made on Sunday, April 12, 2015, by the leader of the African Centre for Leadership Strategies and Development, Humphrey Bekaren who spoke on behalf of the observers.
Bekaren stated further, while speaking in Port Harcourt, the state capital, that the observers were amazed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had disregarded the widespread reports of violence and irregularities and proceeded to declare results in the state.
“We request all lovers of democracy to join us in calling for the outright cancellation of the phony election. Unless this is done, we would have sown the seed that could eventually grow into providing a shade of fear and death over us,” Bekaren said.
“What we saw did not meet international standard of electioneering, not even the ones set by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC,” he added.
Bekaren also said that the unfortunate incidents reported include deliberate delays, diversion of electoral materials, attacks on electoral officers, arson and voter intimidation.
He also said that the election held in Rivers was a far cry from what it should be.
